Real Garage: $10,000 Edition

Kinja'd!!!

Minimum of 2 vehicles and a limit of 4. At least 50% of the garage must have the ability to drive 2,000 miles as they are. Total purchases cannot exceed a total of $10,000 in list prices and all vehicles must be between the 1997 and 2007 model years.

This may not sound like a dream garage but sometimes dreams just gotta keep it real! Ya feel me? Have fun, no need to post listings or prices, I’ll take your word (within reason). Those of you outside the US (which should be a lot of you this time of day), I’ll trust you to make the adjustments. I know $10,000 in US cars is more like $19,000 in Australia or something like that.

The cleanest, biggest engine’d non-M E36 sedan I can find, let’s say $5000.

Kinja'd!!!

And a GMT400 Tahoe, lets say a clean but high mileage one for $3500.

Kinja'd!!!

The other $1500 can go towards gas and parts.

That first round of Azeras are really good looking. There are a surprising amount of Korean large sedans that are crazy clean with barely over 100,000 miles for around $5,000. I’m surprised more people don’t use these cars as clean beaters.

True but a ‘98 would need to be extra rough. I have my eye on a few older ones though at the moment. Pulling the trigger as soon as I score a new job. Project with my pops.

Converting it to CAD, $10 grand US = $13313 CAD.

Saab 900 SPG - $1500, the most recent MCM video gave me an extreme want for one of these.

Infiniti G20 - $3000

Toyota 4Runner - $2800

Kinja'd!!!

Covering all three bases, you’ve got a fun turbocharged sporty two door, a somewhat comfy, luxury sport sedan, and a trail-ready, dead reliable, robust 4x4. What more could you want?

First, I’d go for a Corrado for $3850

http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/5436123855…

An SC 400 for $3250

http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/5475875881…

And to finish it off, a 1984 F250 Diesel for 2800

http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/5453754421…

This all brings me to the price of $9,900

Edit..... Actually read the rules. 2 of my selections do not follow these rules. :(

The idea with these two is of course that at any given time at least one of them will probably be working:

E46 330Ci (pre-facelift)

any straight six E39 (or 540i if possible, but might be hard to find one cheap enough to get both cars in anything resembling useful condition for $10k or less)

Alternately:

RX-8

Wrecked Camaro/Firebird/Vette to do an LS1 transplant from when the Renesis kicks the bucket

Kinja'd!!! Neil drives a beetle and a fancy beetle > Wobbles the Mind

2001 BMW 330i with 105k miles for $4650(though this seems slightly too good to be true).

2005 Volvo V50 with 130k miles for $5500

So I went over by $150...

Kinja'd!!! HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles > Wobbles the Mind
03/06/2016 at 00:15

Kinja'd!!!0

2000 325ci 145,000 miles, but it looks clean, asking 5350.

4x4 v6 Nissan D21 105,000 miles, manual, extended cab, asking 2200 dollars.

1990 LS400 124,000 miles, looks mint, asking just 2000.

So that’s a sports car, a truck, and a luxury car all for just 9550.

I forgot about the 97 and up rule. I don’t like that rule

Admittedly, that’s kinda lame in terms of active aero, but I don’t know of another car at this time with it.

Another one, taking the exchange rate into account the same way For Canada did ($13.3k Canadian):

2001 Porsche Boxster at $8.5k
http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Porsche/Boxs…

1997 E39 528i at $2k (eek..)
http://www.autotrader.ca/a/BMW/5+Series…

That leaves $1.5k to replace the IMS bearing with an LN one in the 986 if it hasn’t been done already and/or fix whatever breaks next on the E39.

Hm.. both of those are actually fairly tempting bad decisions waiting to happen. heheheh

Okay SO here’s try number 2 keeping the 97 and up rule in mind.

2007 Rabbit 2.5l 5 cylinder engine 106,000 miles, just a nice daily. 4995

2001 Mustang GT it’s pretty much the best RWD thing I could find for 5 grand or less. But that’s only because BMWs scare me and you sad it had to be newer than 97.

Kinja'd!!!1

My actual garage already consists of two E46s, so any further acquisitions of questionably reliable Euromobiles would require getting rid of one of those first.

The E46s are an M3 cabrio and a 330Ci coupe. I know that seems a bit backwards, but the M3 is an ‘06 in good condition and the 330 is a higher mileage ‘01 that serves as a winter sacrifice to the rust gods.

Hey how do you like the Crossfire? I am super tempted to buy one because the prices are crazy low for them, even compared to Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky prices. Do you think $17,000 to $20,000 is worth it for an SRT-6?

Kinja'd!!! Conan > Wobbles the Mind
03/06/2016 at 14:34

Kinja'd!!!0

I like it a lot. You should be able to get an SRT-6 for way less than that though, still (unless you’re Canadian/Australian.) You can’t mod the Limited as much. They’re both basically Karmann made SLKs though.

Kinja'd!!! Wobbles the Mind > Conan
03/06/2016 at 14:42

Kinja'd!!!0

Ha, after scrolling down the page I noticed that they got a heck of a lot cheaper. I guess some people are expecting them to start appreciating. It was the first Chrysler branded car to get an SRT treatment I believe.

I don’t think I’d go over 10 for a NICE Limited or over 15 for a NICE SRT. You can even see higher mileage SRTs under 10 fairly often.

Both should go >2000 miles, are between 1997-2007, and add up to $9400 assuming I can do the maths correctly. You should do more of these challenges with extreme limits, I think it makes it fun to both participate and see what others have chosen!
